Undergraduate Researchers
Open Positions
RPBS Lab · Dept. of Intelligent Systems Engineering · Indiana University Bloomington
About the Opportunity
The RPBS Lab welcomes motivated undergraduate students who are curious about biomedical engineering research. Working alongside graduate students, postdocs, and the PI, undergrads gain hands-on experience in a real research environment — learning techniques, contributing to publications, and developing skills for graduate school or industry careers.
No prior research experience is required, but a strong work ethic and willingness to learn are essential.
What You'll Do
- Assist with experimental procedures such as cell culture, molecular cloning, and sample preparation
- Help operate and maintain laboratory equipment (ultrasound systems, microscopes, flow cytometers)
- Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data under the guidance of a graduate student or postdoc mentor
- Participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs to develop scientific communication skills
- Contribute to ongoing research projects with the potential for co-authorship on publications
Who Should Apply
- Current IU Bloomington undergraduates in ISE, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, or related fields
- Students who can commit at least 8–10 hours per week during the semester (more during summer is welcome)
- Interest in biomedical research, ultrasound technology, cell biology, or engineering
- Reliability, attention to detail, and strong communication skills
Funding & Credit
Undergraduate researchers may be eligible for academic credit through independent study courses in the ISE department. Paid research positions and summer research fellowships may also be available depending on funding and experience level.
We also encourage students to apply for IU undergraduate research programs such as the Hutton Honors College Research Fund or the IU Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.
What You'll Gain
- Hands-on training in cutting-edge biomedical research techniques
- Mentorship from experienced researchers in a supportive lab environment
- Skills and experience that strengthen graduate school and medical school applications
- Potential for conference presentations and publication co-authorship
- A deeper understanding of how academic research works from the inside
